The Family Program strengthens the partnership between the Guard and Guard families. The Family Program depends on volunteers. Being involved is an excellent way to educate and support families. Your participation is vital in achieving our Family Readiness Goal.
The Family Program keeps families informed. The Guard’s Family Program notifies family members about various benefits, entitlements and special services available to Guard members and their families during times of deployment and non-deployment.
The Family Program offers an opportunity for Guard family members to interact and network with other families. Our goal is to become a guard community.
The primary mission of any FAC is to provide information and referral to military family members.
The Massachusetts National Guard Family Program Office has established regional Family Assistance Centers (FACs) to support Guard families specifically during times of deployment and separation. The centers are available to support deployed Guard/Reserve and active component family members. Family Assistance Centers serve as the point of contact for help with any type of problem you or your family may have. Trained family program staff is available to assist you in solving your problems or direct you to the appropriate program or agency.

A Family Readiness Group (FRG) is a fully sanctioned organization comprised of military service family members and friends devoted to enhancing the quality of life for all Guard members, their families, and the communities in which they live.
The Family Program Office has established three handbooks as resources to assist units/wings with their respective FRG. The Charter Handbook provides information and instruction on organizing an FRG. The Family Readiness Group Handbook and the Treasurer’s Handbook provide guidelines for fundraising activities and the treasurer’s responsibilities.
The Family Program Network offers Family Readiness Group Leadership Training to its key volunteers. The training is mandatory for Charter volunteers, and key volunteers are encouraged to attend. Application for reimbursement for child care will be available. Take advantage of this opportunity to network with other volunteers and to learn the mechanics of organizing an effective Family Readiness Group for your unit.

Guard Family Team Building (GFTB)
The National Guard Quality of Life Family Action Plan is based on and modeled after the Army Family Action Plan Regulation, AR 608-47(20 October 2003). This process is designed to bring Guard issues both Air and Army and concerns from the field through the command to the national level. The Guard Family Action Plan (GFAP) directs actions to improve family programs, benefits, and entitlements for our National Guard families. These issues have a positive impact on quality of life, family readiness, and retention of a quality force. Many issues identified and presented at the national level have been addressed and if possible, resolved. This is a total force process.
The Guard Family Action Plan (GFAP) is a standardized management tool that is used to create an information loop between the National Guard community and leadership. This provides a means of monitoring the process of issue gathering, submission, dispersion, and resolution. Leadership uses the information, at their discretion, to improve standards of living and institute information and support programs that foster satisfied, informed, self-sufficient individuals.

Deployments put a strain on many families’ budgets, but there are resources available to help Service members and their families who are experiencing financial hardships due to deployment.
The Office of the State Treasurer has a Homefront Financial Security Loan that is available for all members of the Massachusetts National Guard who have been called to active duty at home or abroad since September 11, 2001. The loan is limited to one application per borrower and the amount of the loan cannot exceed $10,000. The term of the loan is limited to the length of the call up, plus two years and the interest rate is 3%. There are also other financial relief programs offered through the American Red Cross, USO, Salvation Army as well as other community service programs, but conditions do apply. Contact your Regional Family Assistance Center for more information.
Air National Guard or Air Force Reserve personnel away from home station on extended active duty 15 days or more under Title 10 USC are eligible for emergency assistance when the emergency is incident to, or resulting from applicant's active duty tour.

The EANGUS We care for America Foundation, Inc. (WCFA) will offer an emergency grant (referred to here after as the “National Guard Soldier and Airmen Emergency Relief Fund”) to any member of the Army and Air National Guard (referred to as “eligible member”) who has experienced catastrophic financial hardship and personal property loss while serving as a member of the National Guard of the United States. The assistance will continue to be made available based on availability of funds. Membership in EANGUS is not required for eligibility in this program.

The Friends of National Guard and Reserve Families Foundation is here to help ease the burden of the financial strain deployment brings to Citizen Soldiers and their families. The foundation provides financial gifts to citizens of Massachusetts who are members of the National Guard as well as all other Reserve components who are suffering financial hardships due to activation or an extended military commitment.

Helmets to Hardhats is a new national program that offers direct entry into apprenticeship programs within the construction industry to National Guard, Reserve and transitioning active duty members. It provides our members with quality career training and employment opportunities within the construction industry. For any of your soldiers who are deploying an apprenticeship can be waiting for them when they return home. This is a great benefit to any soldier that wears or has worn the uniform. Any soldier can register to use the site. For soldiers who are not interested in the union, there may be opportunities for referral to positions offered by agencies affiliated with the unions. It can even benefit spouses.

The Red Cross works with the military aid societies (Army Emergency Relief, Navy Marine Corps Relief Society, Air Force Aid Society and the Coast Guard Mutual Assistance). This partnership helps to provide financial assistance for emergency travel that requires the presence of the service member or his or her family, burial of a loved one, or with assistance that cannot wait until the next business day (food, temporary lodging, urgent medical needs, or the minimum amount required to avoid eviction, utility shut off, etc.).

The Salvation Army is a worldwide organization committed to serving people, changing one life at a time. The Salvation Army works every day to make life better for countless people in your community. The Salvation Army helps all military families that are in need whether they are suffering financial hardship or in need of heating assistance. The military member does not have to be activated to qualify for help.

While our military troops are working to keep us out of harm's way, the Unmet Needs Program is attempting to do the same for their families. Thousands of families across the nation are facing financial challenges while a spouse is deployed. The Unmet Needs Program was created to extend a hand.

USA Cares is a "Hand Up and not a Hand Out" to our military servicemen and women and their families. The primary intention of the donated funds is to assist families in quality of life issues. Our most important objective is to be there for those immediate issues that require a quick turn around, like food on the table, or other quality of life issues.

USO of New England is not a government agency. We are a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization supported by private citizens and corporations. The USO of New England delivers programs and services to men and women called to duty for the War on Terrorism. Through public support we provide FAMILY ASSISTANCE (emergency assistance to active duty military families). The USO of New England is a last resort type of assistance for families that have exhausted other alternative ways of support.
