State Command Sgt. Maj. Gregory C. Widberg


CSM Widberg was appointed as the 8th State Command Sergeant Major of the Massachusetts National Guard on 11 September 2017.

CSM Widberg is a native of Massachusetts.  He enlisted in the Massachusetts Army National Guard on 9 March 1986, as an 11B Infantryman.  He attended Basic Training, Advance Individual Training and U.S. Army Airborne School at Ft Benning, GA, and has completed all levels of the Noncommissioned Officer Education System to include the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy.  He is also a graduate of the U.S. Army Garrison Command Leadership Course.

CSM Widberg mobilized and deployed to Fort Dix, NJ in 2002 in support of Operation Noble Eagle after the 911 attacks, as the 1SG of A Company, 1-104th Infantry.  His unit was responsible for the security of Fort Dix entry points.  CSM Widberg deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 as the Command Sergeant Major of 1st BN, 182nd Infantry Regiment.  The 1-182 Infantry Regiment was responsible for the security of 13 Provincial Reconstruction Teams located around the country.  CSM Widberg was simultaneously tasked as being the Garrison Command Sergeant Major of Camp Phoenix, located in Kabul, Afghanistan.  As a Team Leader, SGT Widberg made a parachute descent into Panama in 1989, leading an infantry team into fierce urban combat during Operation Just Cause.

CSM Widberg is currently on military leave of absence from Brandeis University where he is employed as Senior Mechanical Engineer for Physics and the Division of Science.
